About CLTR

CLTR is an independent think tank with a mission to transform global resilience to extreme risks. We do this by working with governments and other institutions to improve relevant governance, processes, and decision making. We are based at Public Hall in London.

Our vision is a safe and flourishing world with high resilience to extreme risks, such as those from pandemics and emerging technologies.

We focus on two areas of risk where effective governance today could substantially mitigate both current and future threats: artificial intelligence (AI) and biosecurity. To help build this resilience, we also focus on Risk Management more broadly — the process of both transforming risk governance, and of identifying, assessing and mitigating all extreme risks. Our multidisciplinary team is strengthened by a brilliant Operations Unit, dedicated External Affairs and Fundraising functions, and a Strategy team which aims to enable a thriving, growing and impactful team.

We have three organisational values which guide our behaviour: i) people first, ii) targeted real-world impact and iii) integrity.

Your team

Working at CLTR means using your experiences, skills and passion to contribute to our mission of transforming global resilience to extreme risks. You’ll be working alongside purposeful and committed colleagues to support governments and other institutions to make our world safer.

Our mission is huge and feels personal for all of us, so you’ll be working alongside people who care as much about their work as you do. We recognise the scale of the challenges we are working to mitigate, and joining us comes with a commitment from CLTR to care deeply about your well-being and overall experience working with us.

You’ll be working closely with our Chief Executive, Angus Mercer, our Director, Sophie Dannreuther, and our two non-executive directors, Anna-Joy Rickard and Richard Parr. You can find out more about them and our wider team here. You’ll have many opportunities to engage with all of us, learn more about our work, and connect socially at optional team events.

The focus of your role

We are looking for an exceptional, committed new Board member to form part of a Board which represents a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

What you'll do

Alongside your new colleagues, you will:

  • Hold our Senior Management Team to account for delivering on our mission;

  • Offer strategic challenge and help steer CLTR in the most impactful direction;

  • Provide support and continuity for CLTR during moments of risk, transition or uncertainty;

  • Ensure that we are living our values.

What you'll bring

We would love you to apply for this role if you:

  • Are motivated to help CLTR achieve its mission of transforming global resilience to extreme risks and will proactively suggest ways to do so;

  • Have proven financial oversight and accounting expertise;

  • Have expertise in legal and regulatory compliance;

  • Can demonstrate your ability to fundraise to help us grow our world-class team;

  • Are diligent and confident that you are able to dedicate up to 40 hours per annum.

What we'll offer you

Working at CLTR means using your experiences, skills and passion to contribute to our mission of transforming global resilience to extreme risks.

Our mission is huge and feels personal for all of us, so you’ll be working alongside people who care as much about their work as you do. We recognise the scale of the challenges we are working to mitigate, and working with us comes with a commitment from CLTR to care deeply about your well-being and overall experience working with us.

We offer payment of £5k per annum for Board members.

Application process

If you think you’d be great at this job and would love working with us, we’d love to hear from you. The process for candidates will look like this:

Stage 1:  You’ll need to complete an initial 20-60 minute application form and submit your CV by 14 July 2024 at 23:59 BST (UTC + 1h).

Stage 2: We’ll invite shortlisted candidates to complete a 60-minute paid work test.

Stage 3: We’ll invite some of these shortlisted candidates to attend a 30-minute interview with a Director.

Stage 4: We’ll invite the final few candidates to attend a 60-minute interview with members of our Board.

Stage 5: We will invite the top candidate to attend a (paid) trial Board meeting and get a sense of working together, most likely leading to appointing them to our Board.

Please note that this length of time from application to selection is variable, and could take around 6 months. This is to allow sufficient time for current and prospective Board members to trial working together, and a consequence of Board meetings happening every 4 months. We may also reopen the application process, though we see this as unlikely. We will do our utmost to communicate updates as soon as we can, and thank you for your understanding.

Our closing date for applications is 14 July 2024 at 23:59 BST (UTC + 1h).

Sharing this opportunity

If you’re not applying yourself, we would greatly appreciate you sharing this role with potential future CLTR Board Members in your networks! We offer a £2,000 bounty if the successful candidate names you as the reason they have applied.

Your data

We take our responsibilities around data very seriously. As part of any recruitment process, CLTR collects and processes personal data relating to job applicants.

And finally...

We know that our organisation is strengthened by the rich variety of perspectives that a truly diverse workforce brings. We want to make sure that our selection processes are as fair as they can possibly be, providing a level playing field for anyone who wants to come and work at CLTR.

Therefore, if you require any adjustments to the application process, please feel free to get in touch with hiring@longtermresilience.org who will be happy to talk through any adjustments you need in complete confidence, and make arrangements on your behalf.

Adjustments can be whatever you need them to be, whether that’s around accessibility, preparation time and space, or relevant expenses to get you to an interview. Let us know what you need, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you’re getting a fair opportunity to succeed.
